Artist Biographies

Gerry & Tracey Roberts - Gerry’s love for music started when he taught himself to play the guitar at the age of 10 and music has been a part of his life ever since. In high school, he was lead guitar player for a rock band. He was choir director for his church for 10 years and 20 years were spent singing in southern gospel quartets - The Lamplighters and Testimony. His quartets shared the stage with southern gospel greats such as The Dixie Melody Boys, The Lesters and The Nelons. He realized his love for the acoustic sound of bluegrass when he and his wife, Tracey, started playing and singing together in 2005. Tracey heard the harmony parts better than the lead at the age of four and has been singing ever since.

Nick Johnson - Five years ago, Nick heard the banjo and really liked it. When he heard that a man from church had one for sale, he convinced his parents to buy it and never looked back. He has been taking lessons for the past three years, enjoying the process of learning bluegrass music. He is currently attending Butler County Community College and working with his father on the farm.
“I thank God for giving me the ability to play the banjo and glorify him through it.”

Tom Unruh - Tom resides in Sedgwick with his wife Crystal and son Nathan. He grew up near Hesston where he is currently employed by AGCO Corporation as an Engineering Group Leader. Tom enjoys spending time with his family, hunting, fishing and playing guitar. A lifelong lover of bluegrass gospel music, he had not performed bluegrass until forming Jammin’ Biscuits with the Roberts in 2008. For more than a decade he played mostly western music with The Salt Plains Drifters. Prior to that, Tom could be heard at everything from church functions to grunge rock shows. A true music enthusiast - especially for the message found in bluegrass gospel - Tom is one of the pieces that make the “Biscuits” sound special.

Rollin Schmidt - Rollin’s first music influence was during his grade school years - singing in school and church. He received a guitar for grade school graduation and formed his first band as a freshman in high school. After high school, he started the band Ma’s Cookin’ Stove which enjoyed local success. As a founding member of the Cactus Jack Band, he spent over 2 years as a full time musician doing Midwest tours and opening for several national groups. He then joined The Greenhorns doing bluegrass and songs of Americana. He shared the stage with Nashville performers WC Edgar, Becky Baker (Hee Haw,) Jamie Ratliff (with John Prine,) Louise Mandrell, Trick Pony, McBride & The Ride and songwriter, Gary Waddell. Rollin plays lead and rhythm guitar, pedal steel, dobro, banjo, electric and upright bass. When asked about his major influences, he simply replies, “any musician and Jesus.”

Gary Roberts - Gary Roberts plays the bass guitar and has sung with other quartets in the area. He and his wife Anita live in Newton.

Brian Roberts - Brian is Gary’s son and learned to play the guitar while in college. He is the reserve guitar player and helps out when opportunities warrant. He loves to play bluegrass, rock and country. He and his family live in Wichita.
